The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats men’s basketball team is entering the 2025–26 campaign with renewed energy, lofty expectations, and a schedule that leaves no room for comfort. Under the leadership of head coach Reggie Theus, the Wildcats are looking to build on last season’s success and make a run at a conference title.
Heading into the season, Bethune-Cookman was selected as the preseason favorite in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Wildcats collected 12 of 22 first-place votes in the league poll—their first time being chosen as the top pick since rejoining the conference.
Coach Theus and his staff have made it clear that this is a “now” season—one in which the program aims to take a big step forward rather than simply tread water. The Wildcats’ non-conference slate is among the most ambitious in recent years. Bethune-Cookman will face multiple Power Four opponents early in the season, including games against Auburn, Miami, and others. The goal is to test the team early, expose weaknesses, and prepare for the grind of SWAC play.
With 11 home games scheduled and key conference matchups highlighted, the Wildcats are positioned both to challenge themselves and to showcase their growth. While the season is still young, Bethune-Cookman already has a telling performance under its belt. In a road contest against Auburn, the Wildcats gave the Tigers a scare, pushing the game to overtime before coming up just short, 95–90. That kind of showing speaks volumes about the team’s readiness and competitiveness. Though the result was a loss, the effort suggests they are capable of rising to big-stage occasions.
For Bethune-Cookman to fulfill its promise this season, several areas will be decisive:
-
Consistency in big games – Playing tough opponents early is one thing; winning those nights is another. The Wildcats will need to maintain composure and finish strong under pressure.
-
Strength in conference play – With the SWAC being deep and competitive, maintaining focus and executing at home will be essential. Coach Theus emphasized that the league “is full of talented teams and experienced coaches.”
-
Leveraging home court – Moore Gymnasium’s energy and fan enthusiasm can provide a crucial edge. Maximizing those environments may tip close games in their favor.
-
Growth from early tests – The non-conference battles aren’t just a showcase; they’re a proving ground. Learning from those experiences will set the tone for the rest of the year.
This campaign isn’t simply another season—it’s an opportunity. For a program that has steadily climbed in recent years, and for fans who crave a breakout moment, the 2025–26 Wildcats represent both hope and expectation. If everything aligns—preparation, execution, and mental toughness—Bethune-Cookman could be vying not just for conference success, but for a postseason berth that would elevate the program’s profile.
The Wildcats have laid the groundwork for something special. The pieces are in place: strong coaching, a challenging schedule, high expectations, and early demonstrations of grit. Now it’s about putting it all together, night in and night out. If they do, this could be the season when Bethune-Cookman reminds the conference—and college basketball at large—that they mean business.
