The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats traveled to Louisiana this past weekend to face the Grambling State Tigers in a hard-fought contest that ended in both disappointment and controversy. Despite a competitive performance on the field, the Wildcats fell 31–23, and the game’s aftermath has since made national headlines.
Grambling State opened the game with a 10–0 lead before the Wildcats responded with two consecutive scores to even the contest at 10 apiece. The second quarter featured several explosive plays from both sides, including a 59-yard touchdown pass by the Tigers that helped them maintain a 24–20 advantage at halftime. Bethune-Cookman continued to battle in the second half, but Grambling ultimately held on for the victory.
Quarterback Timmy McClain led the Wildcats’ offense with an efficient first half, completing 15 of 18 passes for 224 yards. Wide receiver Maleek Huggins also delivered a standout performance, recording six receptions for 122 yards and a 61-yard touchdown that tied the game at 17. However, Grambling quarterback Hayden Benoit countered with four touchdown passes—three in the first half—while the Tigers accumulated nearly 200 rushing yards to secure the win.
Although Bethune-Cookman demonstrated offensive progress and resilience, the night took a drastic turn at halftime when an altercation broke out between players from both teams. Reports indicate that several players left their locker rooms and engaged in a physical confrontation that escalated into a bench-clearing brawl.
Following a review of the incident, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) issued significant disciplinary actions. A total of 27 players were suspended—nine from Bethune-Cookman and eighteen from Grambling State. In addition, three players received two-game suspensions for what the conference described as “especially severe conduct.” The SWAC also fined Bethune-Cookman $25,000 and Grambling State $40,000, releasing a statement condemning the altercation and noting that “acts of this nature have no place in the league.”
The incident has overshadowed what was otherwise one of Bethune-Cookman’s stronger performances this season. While the Wildcats showcased offensive efficiency and determination, the disciplinary fallout now raises concerns about depth, focus, and team discipline heading into the remainder of the year.
