Timouris Witherspoon, a sophomore political science major from Broward County, Florida, was elected to be SGA Vice President for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Witherspoon is an active member of several campus organizations, including the Concert Chorale, Progressive Black Men, Inc., and the Caribbean Student Association. During his time on campus, Witherspoon has consistently emphasized the importance of leadership, service, and the creation of meaningful opportunities that enhance the overall student experience. His campaign was marked by intentionality and innovation, highlighted by the development of a comprehensive, alphabetically structured plan outlining his goals and initiatives.
Witherspoon sat down with staffer Keiana Haines to talk about the campaign and his goals.
What was the main reason you decided to run for President/ Vice President?
I decided to run for Vice President because I truly care about the student experience and the culture of our campus. I believe student leadership should be visible, accessible, and proactive. Running for this position gave me the opportunity to help create meaningful CHANGE, amplify student voices, and work with my president to strengthen the connection between students and administration.
What are three specific goals your administration hopes to accomplish during your term?
First, increasing student engagement through consistent campus events and programming that students actually want to attend. Second, strengthening communication between students and administration so that student concerns are heard and addressed effectively. And, third Supporting student organizations and leadership development by ensuring clubs and organizations have the resources and recognition they deserve.
How will your platform benefit the different student groups across campus?
Our platform was designed to benefit all students across campus, including student organizations, academic groups, cultural organizations, athletes, and residential students. By creating more collaborative events, improving communication, and supporting student initiatives, we want to ensure every group feels represented and included in campus life.
During your campaign, you mentioned promoting campus unity and bringing back more events to increase student involvement. What specific events or initiatives do you plan to introduce?
To increase involvement, we plan to introduce and expand several initiatives such as: ● Large campus unity events that bring organizations together. ● Student organization showcases where clubs can highlight their work and recruit members. ● Interactive campus events such as competitions, game nights, and cultural celebrations. ● Collaborative programming between SGA and student organizations to keep campus energy active throughout the semester. Our goal is to make sure there is something for everyone on campus.
What qualities do you believe made you the strongest candidate for these positions?
The qualities that made us strong candidates include dedication, experience, and vision. We have both been actively involved in leadership and understand the needs of students. We are also committed to serving, listening, and working hard to turn ideas into real action for the student body.
During your campaign, you stated, “This is more than a campaign. This is a movement.” What did you mean by that?
When we said “This is more than a campaign, we meant that our vision goes beyond simply winning an election. It represents a shift toward stronger student unity, increased engagement, and leadership that truly represents the voices of the student body. It is about building momentum for lasting change on campus.
What previous leadership roles or experiences helped prepare you for this position?
My previous leadership experiences helped prepare me for this role. I have served as Secretary of Progressive Black Men Inc., Secretary of the Caribbean Student Association, and Creative Director Assistant for Obsidian Step Troupe, while also being involved in Concert Chorale and the Robotics Club. These roles allowed me to develop skills in organization, collaboration, communication, and leadership.
How do you plan to advocate for students with the university administration while following through on the promises you made during your campaign?
Advocating for students begins with listening. We plan to actively gather student feedback through forums, conversations, and collaboration with student organizations. From there, we will work closely with university leadership to present solutions that align with the needs of students while maintaining a strong partnership with the administration.
